Review: Out of the Dark (The Grey Wolves Series) by Quinn Loftis (3 stars)

Four packs of powerful wolves come together to form an unlikely union, but one of their number has other ideas. What follows is a complicated and at times somewhat convoluted tale of rivalries and friendships, as the different wolf factions fight to maintain their position in the wolf world. In particular, a witch must be defeated in order to ensure that the wolves can prosper.

Out of the Dark (The Grey Wolves Series) proves that while it’s difficult to come up with a new werewolf mythology, it can be done. The series has a very complex version of wolf society, almost too complex at times. In fact, there are moments when characterisation seems to have been sidelined in favour of world-building. But thankfully, the book overall remains fascinating and very inventive.

Quinn Loftis is a very capable writer who manages to force the material to conform to a particular narrative. The wolf world described in this novel is both convincing and interesting, and overall this is a valuable and interesting addition to the world of werewolf mythologies. This could definitely be a series to watch.
